Our Practices
Can Agriculture and the Environment Coexist?
At Greenwood we feel privileged to work surrounded by nature. On hillsides too steep for nursery pots, we grow certified organic avocados. Shipping regulations keep the nursery from going 100% organic, but we keep moving towards that goal. The locals like this approach; we’ve counted 60 bird species, 40 California native plant types, and over 20 animal species on our farm.
Water
We use no imported water; only rain and groundwater, working with land contours and mulch to minimize runoff and maximize percolation. We’ve built our nursery beds to detain, clean, and percolate over a million gallons of runoff per storm. Each year we plant more native Sycamore and Oak trees.
Reuse and Recycle
Our plastic containers are picked up from customers’ landscape projects for reuse, and repurposed construction materials are everywhere. Each year local stables and tree services bring us over 5 thousand tons of waste that we sort and compost into nursery mix and mulch.
Pollinators
Our beekeeper moves hundreds of hives here each winter. Pollen from our daylilies helps the bees build strength for their trip to the almond orchards. Then they come back and pollinate our avocado blooms. We don’t spray orchard weeds, so our crew can selectively “weedwhack”, avoiding lupines, butterfly weed, clover, and other bee-friendly plants
